Go to our 45 is the new 50 Colorectal Cancer Screening Page.

Screening rates for colorectal cancer are lower in Essex County when compared to NYS rates. The rates of  colon/rectal cancers are higher than both regional and state averages.
Reasons people may not get screened for colorectal cancer:

đź’˛Cost concerns: Even with insurance coverage, out-of-pocket costs, time off work, and transportation challenges can act as deterrents, especially for individuals with limited resources.
âť“ Lack of healthcare access: People without a regular doctor or adequate health insurance might face difficulties navigating the healthcare system and obtaining screening services.
⌚ Inconvenient scheduling: Busy lifestyles or limited office hours can make booking and attending screening appointments difficult.

Community Opioid Overdose Prevention Program (COOP)

The Essex County Health Department (ECHD) is a registered overdose prevention program through the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH). The focus of ECHD’s Community Opioid Overdose Prevention (COOP) Program is to train community members to recognize and respond to an overdose and increase access to give naloxone (Narcan) to prevent fatalities.

Through our COOP program, community members can anonymously request a Naloxone (Narcan) kit, receive training on administering, and report Narcan usage below. Included in each kit are local contacts to connect people with recovery support, 24hr crisis access, and referral services.
